New information pack for driving instructors

An information pack for newly-qualified approved driving instructors (ADIs) will be available next week.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is introducing the glovebox-sized pack after listening to what experienced ADIs said they would have wanted when they started out.

From Monday, 10 August, all newly-qualified ADIs will receive a plastic wallet containing cards, leaflets and booklets full of information about their new career.

Charles Morton, Registrar of Approved Driving Instructors for DSA, said: "We have listened to feedback from ADIs, which indicated that when they first qualified, they would have found a pack like this useful, as it contains information about how to make the most of their new career and help their pupils.

"The pack is designed to be glovebox-sized so that ADIs can have it readily to hand. They will also be able to add any ‘pull-out-and-keep' brochures we publish in Despatch magazine, and there is room for them to insert their own useful information."

All newly-qualified ADIs will receive the new pack from Monday. ADIs who have registered within the last six months will be sent a pack on request.

To obtain a pack, email adireg@dsa.gsi.gov.uk or write to: DSA, The Axis Building, 112 Upper Parliament Street, Nottingham, NG1 6LP.

Brake's Buddy Driving Instructor scheme

brakeDriving instructors can help train safe drivers by signing up to Brake's Buddy Driving Instructor scheme, helping to promote Brake's acclaimed 2Young2Die campaign. All Buddy Instructors receive a pack of 2Young2Die driver safety resources from the charity to discuss with, and pass on, to pupils. These packs include:

  • 25 of our acclaimed 2Young2Die booklets - a hard-hitting, glossy guide to staying alive on the road, specifically written for young drivers
  • Sober Up leaflets - the facts on drink and drugged driving, specifically aimed at young drivers
  • Tyre tread indicator cards - credit-card size card with a tyre tread indicator and Brake's 'Pledge to Drive Safely' tips

All Buddy Instructors also receive a FREE subscription to the Brake Professional scheme for one year. This means you receive a regular e-bulletin of our internationally-acclaimed newsletter, Road Safety News, quarterly mailings including research reports, posters and leaflets produced by Brake, the Government and other organisations, and discounts to our conferences on road safety.

All we ask in return is that you ask your next 25 pupils to pay £1 more for one of their driving lessons in return for their resources from Brake - and that you donate £25 to the charity upfront in advance of you collecting these extra £1s (which you keep). This means the scheme is entirely self-funding for you and you recoup your donation!

Every penny collected goes towards Brake's life-saving educational work and care services for road crash victims, and enables us to provide you with more resources in the future at the same low cost. Just call us on 01484 559909 when your pack runs out.

Thinking of Becoming A Driving Instructor?

In today's fast-moving society, it is essential and usually expected to be able to travel independently and so the importance of learning to drive cannot be ignored. With the number of lessons taken by each learner to pass the driving test increasing year on year, the demand for professionally trained driving instructors is huge. The driving test itself is becoming ever more complex and demanding and as road conditions become busier, new instructors will witness a growing demand in the number of driving lessons required by their students. Last year there was 1.9-millon tests taken and the growth is around 10% year on year.

Some information gained from the DSA that will give you an example of the standards you will have to comply with are:

  • Pass rate for a pdi taking the tests ‘part 1 theory’ is a 50% pass rate
  • Part 2 driving ability has a pass rate of 45%
  • Part 3 instructional ability has a pass rate of 28%

As you can see to get through the stringent test you must have an excellent instructor and be willing to put the time in to practice and memorise the theory.
